How Mindfulness causes change

Mindfulness causes change — just not in the way people expect
You know that quiet, satisfying moment when something that once felt clunky or difficult suddenly feels natural? That little inner thrill of "oh wow… look how far I’ve come". Your confidence lifts, your outlook softens, and the world feels a touch more manageable.
That’s the flavour of change mindfulness creates.
Not through force. Not through fixing.
Through noticing.
And yes — I can already hear the familiar protest:
“But Sonja, you always say we’re not trying to change anything when we meditate!”
Absolutely. And here’s where the beautiful paradox comes in.
🌀 The brain changes when attention changes aka attention follows focus.
Imagine you’re researching a new car. You’ve watched all the videos, read all the articles, asked all the EV‑curious friends… and finally narrowed it down to two models.
Suddenly those exact cars are everywhere.
On the road. In car parks. In adverts.
It feels like the universe is rearranging itself around you and your desire for a new car — but really, it’s your brain.
This is the frequency illusion*: once something becomes relevant, your mind starts highlighting it. Before that, it simply filtered it out.
You didn’t decide to notice those cars.
Your brain just quietly updated its settings.

🧠 Mindfulness works the same way
Our working definition: “Knowing what is happening, whilst it is happening, no matter what it is.”
Every time you sit down to practice, you become more aware of what your mind tends to do. And because humans are creatures of habit, the same themes pop up again and again:
- housework thoughts
- worries about time
- stories about how the day should go
By repeatedly bringing awareness to these patterns, your brain starts flagging them outside of practice too.
Suddenly, mid‑afternoon, you catch yourself thinking:
“I’m getting irritated because I still need to fold the laundry and hoover when I get home.”
That moment — that tiny flicker of awareness — is the doorway. That's where our sitting practice pays off.

🌿 Awareness creates choice
This is where the real change happens.
Not in the meditation itself, but in the rest of your life.
You notice irritation.
You pause.
You breathe.
You ask: What would feel supportive right now?
Maybe it’s compassion.
Maybe it’s permission to leave the hoovering for tomorrow.
Maybe it’s asking someone for help.
You’re no longer swept along by autopilot.
You’re responding rather than reacting.
🧘♀️ So when I say “we’re not trying to change anything”…
I mean in the moment of practice.
We’re not forcing a mindset.
We’re not pretending we feel differently.
We’re not pushing discomfort away.
We’re simply noticing — and allowing ourselves to be human.
The change comes later.
Sometimes subtly.
Sometimes slowly.
But always through the gentle repetition of awareness.
🌱 I'll be honest: Mindfulness isn’t a quick fix
It asks for effort, honesty, and the courage to look at things you’d rather avoid.
It asks for daily dedication ( ok, it asks for like 20 minutes, it's not that much).
But the results — the softening, the clarity, the sense of choice — are absolutely worth it
